History of the Museum |
The museum opened to the public in 1989 with funds provided by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Civic Center Program and continued support from then Mayor Peter Torigian. Since then, the museum has welcomed thousands of visitors through its role as a vistor center with the Essex National Heritage Area, as well as over five hundred students a year from Peabody schools.
The museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of philanthropist George Peabody, who was born in the house in 1795. Together with the Peabody Institute Library, the Peabody Historical Society, and the City of Peabody, the museum interprets the history of this great city.
