Peabody, MA. The GEORGE PEABODY HOUSE MUSEUM was recently awarded a Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities project grant in the amount of $3,915 in support of Making Leather; Living Life: An Oral and Documentary History of Work and Life in the Leather Capitol, 1930 to 1980.
This project will collect the memories of men and women who used to work in the leather industry, as well as individuals who are knowledgeable about how the leather industry affected the day to day lives of Peabody's citizens. Combined with objects and photographs in the GEORGE PEABODY HOUSE MUSEUM's collection, the oral histories will tell the story of what Peabody was like during the North Shore's industrial period for generations to come.
Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities funding will allow the interviews to be recorded on digital equipment, transcribed to assist researchers, uploaded to the GEORGE PEABODY HOUSE MUSEUM's website, and used in a temporary exhibit at the museum. The information will be preserved in the museum's collection and made accessible to all researchers.
The project will begin this December, and Peabody Mayor Michael Bonfanti has already agreed to be interviewed. Anyone else interested in contributing to the project with either interviews or objects can call the museum at 978-531-0355 for more information.
The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities receives support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
