George Peabody House Museum One of the city's hidden jewels

Peabody Library Association, Georgetown, D.C.

In 1867, George Peabody donated funds to Georgetown, D.C., to establish a library. Peabody lived in DC for a short while at the beginning of his business career. He set up the funds to "benefit the citizens of Georgetown in the District of Columbia."

The endowment was transformed into what is now the Peabody Room in the Georgetown branch of the District of Columbia Public Library. The Peabody Room serves as a special collection housing over two centuries of Georgetown history.

On April 30, 2007, the entire library suffered from a massive fire. While the Peabody Room did not go up in flames, many objects in the collection were severly water damaged. To prevent the spread of mold that could destroy the materials, they are currently being frozen at a special facility in Texas. For more information on the fire, click here.
