George Peabody House Museum One of the city's hidden jewels

Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University

On October 8, 1866, George Peabody gave Harvard University a generous sum of $150,000. Of the gift, $45,000 was invested and its interest used to purchase objects relating to archaeology and ethnology. Another $45,000 endowed an archaeology and ethnology professorship at the university, and $60,000 built the fireproof museum building.

At the time of Peabody’s gift, archaeology and ethnology were understudied areas. Although the Harvard representatives preferred the gift be applied to other areas of the university, Peabody held strong. Today, the museum boasts a strong collection and serves not only the university but the general public through exhibitions, workshops, symposia, and publications.
