George Peabody House Museum One of the city's hidden jewels

Peabody Institute Library of Danvers

George Peabody was firmly committed to both educational causes and giving back to his community. Because he was born in Danvers, Massachusetts, he donated funds to establish a library in the city in 1856. Peabody wished for “the promotion of knowledge and morality in the Town of Danvers.”

In 1869, a Gothic style library was built at Peabody Park. This structure was destroyed by fire in 1890, but the city rebounded and opened a new building on the site two years later. Today, the library promotes lifelong learning through its many programs, resources and activities.
