George Peabody House Museum One of the city's hidden jewels

Peabody Institute Library, Peabody

In 1852, George Peabody donated $217,000 to fund the Peabody Institute Library in South Danvers (now Peabody). The library was built in 1854 as a brick structure in the Italianate style and still stands on Main Street in Peabody.

Peabody valued education highly and understood the role of libraries within a society. His generosity influenced other philanthropists, such as Andrew Carnegie, to also support libraries.

Today, the Peabody Institute is a vital member of the Peabody community serving thousands of people a year. Click on the links below to learn more about their activities.
