In 1856, George Peabody visited the United States. He included in his travels Cleveland, Ohio, where he met up with an acquaintance, Bishop Charles Pettit McIlvaine, the President of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Ten years later, Peabody gave $25,000 to the school which founded a chair of mathematics and engineering.
