George Peabody supported education in several ways, including museums, schools and libraries. In 1867 he gave $15,000 to the newly formed Newburyport Library in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Peabody had lived in the city for a short while, assisting his older brother David with a drapery shop there.
Peabody gave money to libraries in almost every community that he or his relatives lived in: Danvers, MA; South Danvers/Peabody, MA; Georgetown, MA; Baltimore, MD; Georgetown, DC; and Thetford, VT.
