Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Mass
On February 26, 1867, George Peabody donated $140,000 to the East India Marine Society and the Essex County Natural History Society. These two institutions in Salem, Massachusetts merged in 1915 to become the Peabody Museum of Salem. The museum was renamed the Peabody Essex Museum in 1992.
In its early years, the Peabody Museum focused on the ethnological, maritime and natural history past of the county. Today it celebrates the artistic and cultural objects in its collection from around the world.
