United States Sanitary Commission

At the beginning of the Civil War, President Lincoln created the United States Sanitary Commission. From 1861 to 1866, the Commission mobilized thousands of American women. The volunteers did everything from work in Army camps and hospitals to sew blankets and knit gloves. One of the most valuable services of the women was raising money; they organized Sanitary Fairs which brought in millions of dollars for the Army. George Peabody supported the organization by donating $10,000 in 1864. After the war ended, they fought for veterans rights until the Commission ended in 1866.
