Art in Tanning by Franklin Boggs
In 1958, Albert Trostel and Sons, a leather company in Milwaukee, commissioned artist Franklin Boggs to paint a series depicting steps the leathermaking process. They wanted him to "portray and interpret anew the strength and character of tanning, the beauty of creating leather." When the paintings were unveiled, company CEO Albert O. Trostel Jr. said "The art of tanning has never escaped the tanner walls, but now it has. There is beauty around us daily, but we're so used to it, we never see it. Now we can."
Trostel and Sons made a limited number of prints of the paintings and distributed them to loyal customers. In 2007, the museum received a complete set of nine prints from the Robert Remis Family.
Descriptions of the paintings were taken from Art in Tanning: A Portfolio of Paintings by Franklin Boggs.
We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
