Peabody Leatherworkers Museum Peabody: built on the leather industry

It is unknown who first penned the Peabody football nickname “The Tanners,” although the name no doubt reflects the primary occupation of many of the city’s residents. In the early 1900s, the term “Tannery Town Team” appeared in the local newspapers. School nicknames were not used at the time, neither were the players first names. As the sport evolved, though, interest in football grew and nicknames were used. “Tanners” entered the common lexicon after 1930.

Join us as we look back at Peabody Tanners football of the 20th century.
